The Colossal Squid Exhibition at New Zealand’s Te Papa has an interactive Build a Squid component: you can build (and name!) your own squid from 6 different body parts and a multitude of colors, release it into the ocean, and check in at a later time to see what your squid’s been up to.

Momiji dolls are a modern take on Japanese Kokeshi toys. They retain classic characteristics (carved from wood, have large heads and lack any real appendages), however, include an entirely unique the hole on the bottom – each doll comes with little pieces of paper for writing secret messages. Also, these dolls have irresistibly adorable names like Clever Clogs, Silly Billy, and Hurray.

Pylones (pronounced pee-lone) has stores in Paris and five locations in NY filled with brilliantly colorful items. Browsing Pylones is like rediscovering your childhood – your eyes and hands are drawn to all the flashy toys and the staff doesn’t mind you manhandling everything on display. I circled the store twice and definitely found items I would buy if I wasn’t such a cheapskate..
